Concrete Strength Testing

It is crucial to test the strength of concrete used in a construction project to assure that such concrete meets all required engineering specifications. The following are some methods used for testing the strength of concrete mixes going into construction projects.
One utilized technique is the compressive strength test. It assesses how much compressive force a concrete sample can withstand before failure. In this test, a cylindrical or cubic concrete sample is subjected to compressive forces using a hydraulic press until the concrete sample reaches its breaking point. The compressive strength of such concrete sample is then calculated by dividing the load applied for the concrete to reach failure by the sectional area of the sample.

It is also important to determine concrete strength characteristics is through flexural strength testing. This method gauges how well a concrete beam resists bending forces. A beam sample undergoes loading until it fails, and the maximum load applied divided by the sectional area of the beam gives us its flexural strength.

Another method used for testing concrete is evaluating its bond strength. This test focuses on measuring how concrete adheres to steel reinforcement. A beam sample containing steel reinforcement is placed in a testing machine and pressure is applied to the reinforcement until it fails. The bond strength between the concrete and steel reinforcement is then calculated by dividing the load applied by the sectional area of the steel reinforcement.

To summarize, assessing concrete strength plays a critical role for construction projects as it ensures that the concrete used for said project meets all required engineering/integral specifications called for by the engineers and architects.
